Idea’s & Development

Although my proposal Sex, Lies and Videotapes was shortlisted for Bloomberg I made the decision to concentrate on the development and curation of one piece, this was also attributed to the size and availability within Studio 11, additionally I wanted to manage my time in the best possible way including my other curatorial projects.

When reviewing over the piece’s I had submitted for the installation Sex, Lies and Videotapes I decided I would like to focus on the curation of one of the video pieces. This allowed me to investigate site and situation, adapting the piece within a difference context. This therefore permitted the piece to evolve individually and become substantially autonomous.

The piece I had decided to work on is a video and sound documentation of performance, the piece will question the development of sexual apparatus within contemporary society. The development of this piece sprouted from a conversation about sexual apparatus’ made for women imitating certain objects in an attempt to hide these from their sexual partners. In this case the vibrators additionally add to early idea’s about ‘the male gaze’ and how we as women should represent ourselves, further questioning vanity’s development in social media.

My practice has been thoroughly informed by my research for my dissertation An exploration into the nude, and the context of viewing for spectatorship, Williams, 2014. Within this text I explored ideas surrounding the nude, censorship and voyeurism and researched into its development through sexual revolution to modern contemporary society. Further delving into how we can use these as a tool within our artistic practice, censorship specifically has been used throughout my piece’s. I believe this crossover between research and practice is what allows me gain greater understanding of my work and its contextualisation.
