Luke Fowler and Richard Youngs

On Thursday 7th November 8.30pm, at the Bread and Roses, Ebrington Street, Plymouth. A collaborative performance took place by Luke Fowler and Richard Youngs.

The performance was set to consider various platforms of sound and its social significance using technology as a basis for the making of the music. The performance is set to tour Plymouth, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Brighton. The performance continued to display his constant relationship with sound, and his understanding of this. However, I only know this from my own first hand research as Fowler didn’t give any clues what the performance was about at the talk when he was asked. I was happy to see that throughout the performance there was a consistent use of technology, with even the sound man, editing volumes and bass on an Ipad whilst walking through the crowd.

I feel as if the performance  itself was effected majorly by its situation. For an artist who has previously spoken about how important it is for the audience to perceive his work in the best possible way, I think this wasn’t done in the Bread and Roses. Some of the factors that affected this was space, due to the space of the pub and the amount of people that had been crammed into the space, it was hard to even stand comfortably and listen to the music, let alone sit. It shocked me to see how many tickets they still had to sell for the performance when I had got mine and the pub was already pretty full.

Due to the nature of the performance, I feel if you were an member of the public un-aware of it being an artist performance, you would have felt that is was just a local band come into play, almost like an open mic night evening. I personally love going to gigs, but it was hard to find the line between a music performance, and an artists performance using music in context. But for £3 entry, a bar, and a lot of networking, it was definitely an enjoyable evening.
